Who We Are...

We are a family of faith centered on a belief in Jesus Christ. Grounded in that belief, we seek to follow Christ’s way in our world—loving God with heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving neighbor as self. Like most families, we’re not all the same. Some of us grew up as Presbyterians (or Methodists, or Lutherans, or Catholics…) and have come to trust the church as an institution. Others might consider themselves “spiritually hungry, but institutionally suspicious.” Together we seek to honor our traditions while we open ourselves to the new things God is doing in our midst. Through it all, we hope that our very lives bear witness to the all-encompassing love of God in Jesus Christ.

What We Believe ...

We are a church centered on God’s salvation, which embodies liberation from all that dehumanizes and wholeness which is being the people God calls us to be.

We hope people who join this congregation experience personal liberation and wholeness and that our church outreach enables people in our community and world to do the same.

Who We Partner With ...

The Weather Vane

When First Presbyterian was completed, in 1852, this weather van stood at the top of the 140-foot the steeple—above the gilded ball.  The building, including the arrow-shaped vane, is similar to earlier church buildings that Lucas Bradley designed.  The weather vane survived two lightning strikes, the latest in 1973, and a steeple fire.  By 1992, after 140 years, the metal sheathing was rusted and the wooden shaft had cracked, making it unsafe to leave it atop the steeple.

The weather vane was lowered slowly by crane and put in the basement of the church until a member, Bob Johnson, rescued it.  He took it home, all 11 feet 2 inches of it, and began restoring it in his basement to the state you now see.  The vane was hung in the atrium of First Presbyterian church in 2013 in preparation for the church’s 175th anniversary in 2014.  The old arrow is a reminder to take the good news of the gospel out into the world as we leave this place of worship.
